FAMILY BACKGROUND AND SOCIAL MOBILITY
These questions were designed by Jonathan Kelley, extending a conceptual framework developed with Robert V. Robinson (see Robinson and Kelley, "Class as conceived by Marx and Dahrendorf" American Sociological Review 44: 1979: 38-57) and M.D.R. Evans and applying it "down" a generation to the grown children of the main respondents. Items Phone14 to Home14 were meant to measure wealth during childhood, but be sure to control age in analyses using them because many of them are highly correlated with vintage (reflecting economic growth and technological innovation rather than cross-sectional wealth differences).
Questions on father and mother's education, and on father's occupation, are in the demographic section of this survey.
