International Social Science Surveys

DATA AVAILABLE

A variety of  Isss data are freely available for academic and teaching use, subject to the conditions of use noted below. The data cover a wide variety of topics of interest especially to researchers in sociology, demography, labor economics, and political science. 

• These are the data described in our recent article in the Australian Economic Review (Jonathan Kelley and M.D.R. Evans. 1999. "Australian and International Survey Data for Multivariate Analysis: The IsssA." Australian Economic Review 32:298-302)
• The data are  available for downloading here. They are in the form of SPSS "portable" files, which are easily read by most other statistical analysis programs.  The data are described in codebooks also available for viewing here. Printable versions can also be downloaded.
• '2AF' Secondary Analysis Files are available from several of our  cross-national projects. These include data that have been carefully worked over to make them comparable between nations and to make them user-friendly, so that secondary analysis is very easy. The two sets so far available are spin-offs of our articles and document the analyses in them as well as including a variety of other variables suitable for further analyses.

2AF Secondary Analysis File from "National Context, Parental Socialization, and Religious Belief: Results From 15 Nations",  American Sociological Review, 1997:639-659. This includes about 80 variables and 19,815 respondents.

2AF Secondary Analysis File from "The Legitimation of Inequality: Attitudes Towards Inequality in Nine Nations", American Journal of Sociology, 1993:75-125. There are about 100 variables and 12,567 respondents.

The second edition of our data archive on CD is now available from amazon.com:  International Social Science Surveys Australia 1999 Data Archive It includes almost all our public-use data: 10 surveys, over 22,000 cases in all, with codebooks and frequencies. The data are in the form of SPSS portable files, which can easily be read by most statistical programs.

Conditions of Use

(1) Academic and non-profit use of these data is allowed without charge, so long as (i) proper acknowledgment is given (as detailed in the codebooks), and (ii) no attempt is made to identify individual respondents, and (iii) a copy of all publications using the data is deposited electronically (e-mail: data-use@international-survey.org). All other uses are subject to charges payable to the copyright holders at the rate of US $0.25 per variable used times the number of cases used, unless other arrangements are made by prior written agreement with the copyright holders.

(2) The data sets may not be redistributed except for backup purposes and for course work by undergraduate and Masters level students.

(3) Questionnaire items that are subject to copyright may not be used in other surveys or reproduced in any other way without the explicit written consent of the copyright holders (save for 'fair use' commentary, or to document analyses using them, or as part of this codebook).

(4) Rights to redistribute the codebooks are freely granted, subject to the conditions that it is redistributed unchanged and that no charge is made for it.
