LAYOUT CONVENTIONS:
(1) Questions with V numbers under 100 (eg V12, V43, V73) are repetition items.
PLEASE USE THE SAME WORDING FOR THEM AS YOU USED IN 1992 if you did the inequality module then.
(2) {OPTIONAL PHRASES} are shown in curly brackets { }. These you may omit or include according to your best judgment; you may modify these phrases slightly if you think it best. These optional phrases involve clarification or transition between questions, but never the substance of the question.
(3) [COUNTRY SPECIFIC MATERIAL] is shown in square brackets and capital letters.
For example, for:
in [COUNTRY] taxes are too high
you would insert the name of your country, e.g. ...
in Australia taxes are too high
or
in Norway taxes are too high
(4) [[Material in DOUBLE square brackets like this]] is NOT part of the questionnaire respondents should not see itl!
This is notes about concepts and translation, and other materials for the translator or analyst. (If you are using the Microsoft Word version of these notes, this material will be colored YELLOW.)
(5) Variable numbers are the same as in the Z-A codebook for the 1992 Inequality Module, where possible.
(6) This document lists the questions, but is NOT laid out attractively or compactly. We will later send around a sample questionnaire, showing a typical layout for paper and pencil completion. Note that the wording and order of questions is compulsory for all ISSP members, but the way you lay it out is left to your best judgment for your country.
(7) TRANSLATION NOTES: We will send around more translation notes later. As you get experience translating into your language, PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT NEEDS CLARIFICATION or decisions you make that others should know about. We will circulate these notes too.
(8) We would like to put everyones final questionnaires up on the internet for all to see especially to aid both users and replicators. If you are agreeable, please e-mail us your questionnaire when its ready, preferably in Microsoft Word or in Word Perfect, and we will put it on the internet.
